  1. How did the schizophrenia label come about?

I've examined Leo's Kanner's original notes, but have not had the same opportunity with those of Hans Asperger, thus I'm more familiar with Kanner than I am Asperger. I do know that Kanner was a kindly doctor who cared about his eleven patients, and was disturbed by the fact that the other psychologists consdered them to be retarded. Indeed, he thought they were quite intelligent, and wanted to prove it as well as give other reasons for their behavior.

As I recall, the schizophrenic label came about by basic deductive reasoning. (A) The autistic children seemed to prefer solitude. (B) Schizophrenic people often prefer solitude. therefore (C) autistic children must have some rare, unusual form of schizophrenia. You have to admit, from 1930 medical knowledge, that would have sounded quite plausible. Of course we know better now.
